New Delhi: Breaking News! On a day, when RJD chief Lalu Yadav softened his stand on the no-confidence motion, saying they don't have the numbers to do so, the CBI supported him in a corruption case in the Supreme Court.

The CBI argued in the court that the Bihar government cannot challenge his acquittal in a case that accused him of corruption, as only the prosecuting agency holds the right to do so.

The CBI move was seen as a master stroke played by the Centre to make him fall in line on the issue of Women's Reservation Bill. The CBI said that only the Centre can challenge Lalu Yadav's acquital, and not the state government.

A CBI court in 2006, had acquitted Lalu Yadav and Rabri Davi of all charges of illegally collecting assets worth Rs 50 lakh during the period of 1990-97. Since Lalu was the Railway Minister at that time, the CBI did not challenge against the acquittal. The Bihar government appealed to the Patna High Court in 2008.
